Alma, Mich. - The Alma College wrestling team opened the season with a 25-20 loss to Davenport University. Austin Wieczorek (Kentwood, Mich. / East Kentwood) and Austin Fox (Fort Worth, Texas / Timber Creek) both won by pin fall. Matt Tomsett (Madison Heights, Mich. / Lamphere) won by technical fall 18-2.
Wieczorek started the night out in the 125 weight class with a pin fall in the third period.
Tomsett won by technical fall. He started out strong with a takedown, four-point, and two-point nearfall giving him a 8-1 lead after period one. Tomsett finished the match in the second period when he got a takedown and two four-point near falls.
Fox won the quickest match of the dual. He pinned his opponent in the first 56 seconds.
Jacob Ransom (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West) finished the dual with a 4-3 decision for the Scots. After being down 3-2 in period one, Ransom chose to go on bottom and escaped and received a one point penalty. No points were scored in the third period.
The Scots will head to the west side of the state for the Muskegon Community College Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 9). The next home meet for Alma will not be until 2020. It starts MIAA competition against Trine University (IN) on January 7.
