Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Alma College sits in ninth place after the opening round of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, which began today (Friday, March 11) at the US Cellular Arena.
Senior Jamie Jakes (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) and Trevor Maresh (Northville, Mich./Northville) won their opening round matches and advanced to the quarterfinals in the 197- and 285-pound weight classes, respectively, while freshman Romeo Riley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) fell in his opening round match but was victorious in his first bout in the consolation round.
Riley, seeded seventh at 133 pounds, lost by a 4-0 decision to York's (Pa.) Ryan Flynn in the opening round before scoring a 10-1 major decision over Loras' Michael Triplett in the consolation round. Riley will now face Michael Pleski of St. John's (Minn.) in the wrestle backs. Riley needs two wins in order to earn the coveted All-America status.
Jakes, the sixth seed in the 197-pound bracket, posted a 3-2 decision over Elizabethtown's Luke Fernandez in the opening round and will face SUNY-Cortland's Joe Giaramita in the quarterfinals. Jakes has faced Giaramita, the No. 3 seed in the bracket, already this season when the two met on January 8 at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The fourth seed in the heavyweight bracket, Maresh pinned Ithaca's Daniel Glinka 5:56 into the match to advance to the quarterfinals. He will now face the No. 5 seed, Kyle Williams of Roger Williams, for a chance to advance to the semifinals.
Wartburg (Iowa) leads the field with 17.5 points after the morning session, while Messiah is in second place with 12.5 points. Alma, with 5.5 points, is tied with York (Pa.).
