Alma, Mich. - The Alma College wrestling team is going under the lights tonight - at Bahlke Field in the Scots' first-ever outdoor match. Due to the unseasonably warm temperatures in mid-Michigan, the Scots will move their previously scheduled meet against Davenport University from Art Smith Arena to the 50-yard line of Bahlke Field in what promises to be one of the most unique events in NCAA Division III wrestling. The meet, which is Alma College's opening meet of the 2015-16 season, is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
"I'm tremendously excited for our wrestlers and for this opportunity," said Head Coach Todd Hibbs. The ability to put a spotlight on Division III student-athletes like this is pretty special. I'm grateful that the Alma College community and the Davenport program are supporting us to do this."
The highlight of the meet will be in the 285-pound weight class, where senior All-American Trevor Maresh, ranked third in the country, will face Davenport's Glenn Geurink, who was the National Wrestling Coaches' Association National Champion a year ago. The Scots will also send out Shawn Brewer, ranked fifth in the country - in the 157-pound weight class.
"Davenport has a strong roster and a tremendous coaching staff. We expect a competitive opening match," Hibbs said. "Maresh and Geurink are both heavyweights with elite athleticism and similar body types. You don't get match-ups at heavyweight like this very often. It will be a match to remember."
Tickets for the event are $5, and students and staff with an Alma College ID will be admitted for free. Concessions will be available as well. Parking is available throughout the campus.
Due to construction around the Hogan Center, fans may park in the lot near the Heritage Center and either use the Meijer Heartland Bike Trail or pass through the Hogan Center to access Bahlke Field.
