Alma College Wrestling took part in the very competitive Olivet Duals on Saturday afternoon and came away with an 0-4 mark on the day. The Scots lost 30-6 to Heidelberg, 29-9 to #6 Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 20-15 to #10 Ohio Northern and 30-9 to Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"We had some solid individual performances and as a team, we came very close to knocking off the number 10 team in the country, as it came down to the heavyweight with seconds left in the match," remarked Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "We learned a lot today as a team what it takes to wrestle with the top 10 teams in the country."
Against Heidelberg, Fr. Jamie Jakes (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) won for the Scots at 157 pounds and Sr. Matt Tuttle (Reading, Mich./Reading) was victorious at 165. In the bout with #6 Lacrosse, So. Jared Groeneveld (Allendale, Mich./Allendale) earned a pin at 184 and Fr. Trevor Maresh (Northville, Mich./Northville) won at 197 pounds.
In the close bout versus #10 Ohio Northern, Alma had victories from So. Zac Case (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) at 133, Fr. Gabriel Costanzo (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) at 141, Fr. Caleb Huff (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) at 149, Tuttle at 165 and So. Paul Mikhjian (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) at 174. Finally, against Whitewater, Alma had a pin victory by Tuttle at 165 and Maresh won his match at 197.
The Scots have the next two weeks off from competition and return to the mats Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Ohio Northern Invitational.
