On Friday evening, the Alma College Wrestling team began competition for the 2012-13 season when they took part in the Muskegon Duals. The Scots defeated Niagara County Community College by a mark of 30-12 and then took care of Triton College 54-0 to start the season with a 2-0 record. On Saturday, the team will take part in the Muskegon Open.
"The guys wrestled well tonight, starting strong against a good Niagara CC team that is ranked number 12 among community colleges," said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "We certainly did not look like a bunch of freshmen and sophomores out there and it was great to see. Tomorrow is another big day as we compete in the open, so it will be fun to see how it plays out."
There were many highlights to take away from the two victories, but Hibbs gave specific notice to four individual wrestlers. So. Jared Groeneveld (Allendale, Mich./Allendale) and Fr. Adam Robinson (Mason, Mich./Mason) each had two pins at 184 pounds and heavyweight respectively.
In addition, two grapplers won both of their matches during the duals - So. Zac Case (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) and Fr. Trevor Maresh (Northville, Mich./Northville) - at 133 and 197 pounds. However, they were joined by many other very good contributions in the victories as the team juggled the line-up throughout the evening.
