Women’s Lacrosse Shuts Down Hiram

Hiram, Ohio - The Alma College women's lacrosse team dominated Hiram College (OH) 14-5 on Friday (Feb. 6) evening in the heavy snow. The game was called with 12 minutes remaining due to extreme weather conditions.

Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) led the Scots with four goals; she added four draw controls. Emma Keith (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) scored a season-high three goals. Johnna Pullen (Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia) scored twice and added a team-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) made ten saves in goal.

Hiram scored the game's first goal but Alma was quick to respond. Benoit caused a turnover after the ensuing draw control, picked up the ground ball and scored to tie the game.

Kalyn Thompson (Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton) scored her only goal of the game less than a minute after Hiram took a 2-1 lead. Less than 30 seconds after Thompson's goal, Keith scored her first to give Alma a 3-2 lead.

The Scots began to pull away later in the first half. Keith broke a 3-3 tie with eight minutes remaining to open the flood gates. Alma scored six of the last seven goals of the half, including one by Pullen with 18 seconds left. The Scots led 9-4 at the break.

Haley Willman (Hemlock, Mich. / Breckenridge) kept Alma's run going early in the second half with her second goal of the game just over three minutes in. Pullen and Keith scored in a 14-second span two minutes later to pad the lead.

Keith's three goals triples her total entering the game. Ava Frederickson (Alto, Mich. / Lowell) had six ground balls – as many as Hiram had as a team.

Alma has a week off before its next game when it hosts Mount St. Joseph University (OH) on Friday (Mar. 13) at 5:00 p.m. at Bahlke Field.
