Crestview Hills, Ky. - The Alma College women's lacrosse team defeated Thomas More College (KY) 9-8 thanks to a game-winning goal by Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) in double overtime on Monday (Feb. 25).
Benoit scored twice and picked up a team-high three ground balls, while Courtney Hartnagle (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) led the Scots (1-1) with three goals. Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) made eight saves in net.
Alma held a three-goal lead early in the first half, but the Saints scored three straight to tie the game with under ten minutes to go. After a scoreless first overtime, Benoit scored with 2:47 left in the period.
How It Happened
- The two teams traded goals over the first 20 minutes of the game with Alma getting the upper hand with a goal from Kennedy Hilley (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood) at 10:46. Hartnagle scored her first goal on a free position shot two minutes later and Kalyn Thompson (Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton) added another unassisted goal shortly before the half ended.
- Benoit scored a man-up goal on a free position shot three minutes into the second half to give Alma a 7-4 lead. Thomas More would score the next three goals to tie the game at seven midway through the half.
- Hartnagle broke the tie at 9:37 with an unassisted goal and the Saints answered two minutes later. Benoit would go on to score the game-winner in double overtime on a free-position shot.
The Scots travel to Waynesburg University (PA) to play the Yellow Jackets at 4:00 p.m.
