Alma, Mich. - Ashley Johnson, the head coach of the Alma College women's lacrosse team, has announced the team's captains for the 2017 season. Senior Darby Kahler (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater), junior Brianna Soriano (San Diego, Cali./Serra) and senior Miranda Kruse (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) have each been named to the honor as practice begins.
"The team has chosen three fantastic representatives to act as captains for the 2017 season," said Head Coach Ashley Johnson. "Miranda, Darby, and Brianna each have a different leadership style which allows them to impact our team in unique ways, and collectively, they have earned the respect of their teammates and coaches."
Kahler has started in 42 of 47 games in her three-year career. She was awarded the team's rookie of the year award in 2014 and has tallied 24 goals in three seasons, including 16 as a junior last year. She is also tied for second among returning players in points with 18.
Soriano played in three games as a junior last season, scoring seven goals and causing two turnovers. She won the MIAA Player of the Week after scoring five goals and picking up five ground balls against the University of Chicago-Concordia.
Kruse, a goalkeeper, has been a member of the team for all four years. Her sophomore season, she started all 16 games and made 113 saves. She was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Player of the Week the second week of the season and was named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll following the year.
The women's lacrosse season begins on February 26 against Whitman at a neutral field. Its first three games are away from home and its first match at Bahlke Field is Tuesday, March 7 against Illinois Tech. The conference schedule kicks off against Albion at home on Wednesday, April 5.
