Marshall, Mich. - The Alma College women's golf team opened up the 2018-19 season with a fourth-place finish on Day 1 of the Olivet Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 1). The Scots tallied 358 (+70) strokes and were led by senior Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion), who had an 83 (+11) and tied for fourth overall. Freshman Ava Gardiner (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Adlai E. Stevenson) finished second on the team with a 90 (+18).
Hanover is in first after the first day with a 337 (+49) with Aquinas just behind them with 341 (+53) strokes. Olivet is in third, four strokes ahead of Alma. Aquinas's Emma Millard had the round's best score of 74 (+2).
- Hannah Joslin (Linden, Mich. / Linden), Kennedy Hilley (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood) and Jennifer Kowalczyk (Northville, Mich. / Northville) all finished in the top 20 overall for the Scots. Joslin shot a 92 (+20) and both Hilley and Kowalczyk both shot a 93 (+21).
- Tori Basso, Ava Gardiner and Kennedy Hilley each posted one birdie. Basso also had seven pars while Hannah Joslin had six.
- Sophomore Kirstyn Cotton (Midland, Mich. / Midland) shot a 91 playing as an individual. She placed 15th overall and shot three strokes better than the next individual player.
Round Two of the Olivet Invitational takes place on Sunday (Sept. 2) beginning at 8:30 a.m.
