Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team defeated Saint Mary's College (IN) 59-50 on Saturday (Feb 8) afternoon.
Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) led all players with 21 points along with five made three-pointers. She had 11 points in the third quarter alone. Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) cleaned up with 12 points and 13 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the year, along with two blocks. Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich. / Pewamo-Westphalia) had seven points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals.
The Scots (10-12, 5-8 MIAA) held Saint Mary's to 33 percent shooting and forced MIAA leading scorer Giavanna Paradiso into a 5-for-20 performance. When the Belles (8-13, 5-7 MIAA) pulled to within two at the end of the third quarter, Brandt brought the momentum back to Alma with two consecutive layups to open the fourth.
The Belles got to within one possession twice more in the fourth and the Scots answered each time. Warchock had back-to-back jumpers with four minutes left to push Alma's lead to seven.
Alma has a week off before hosting No. 2 Hope College at Art Smith Arena. Game time on Saturday (Feb. 15) is set for 3:00 p.m.
