Women’s Basketball Downed by Calvin

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team fell to Calvin University 65-48 on Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon.

Oretha Humphries (Detroit, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public) led the Scots with 16 points, making all six of her free throws. Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots.

Alma was a little slow out of the gate as Calvin earned a nine-point lead after the first quarter. The Scots found their way in the second by forcing Calvin to shoot under 40 percent from the field and 3-of-23 from three-point range in the first half. Alma also scored 19 points in the second, including a 10-2 run to end the first half and cut the score to 31-26 at the break.

The Knights extended their lead in the third quarter thanks, in part, to making nine of their 11 free throws. Alma's only two free throws in the frame came from Jackie Jarvis (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville) and brought the Scots to within two points. The Knights would score the next 12 points to take control going into the fourth.

Gabby Timmer led all players with 24 points and 12 rebounds. She is in the top three in the conference in both categories.

The Scots return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 5) when they travel to Trine University (IN). Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
