Notre Dame, Ind. - The Alma College women's basketball team nearly completed a 12-point comeback against Saint Mary's on Wednesday (Dec. 4) evening but came up just short 55-51. Both teams are now 4-4 overall; Alma drops its conference opener while the Belles begin 1-0.
Trailing by 12 with 4:23 remaining in the game, Alma went on an 11-0 run to get to within one with less than two minutes left.
It had a chance to take the lead on a fast break after Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) came up with a steal but Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) couldn't convert the contested layup. Saint Mary's scored a transition bucket on the ensuing trip down the floor to go back up by three.
Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich. / Pewamo-Westphalia) got Alma back to within one with a cutback off a Brandt miss. Thelen came back on the other end to draw a charging foul but the Scots squandered the extra possession with a turnover.
After the Belles hit a free throw to go up by two with 21 seconds left, Brandt's attempt to tie the game sat on the rim before trickling off.
Brandt led all scorers with 14 points. She also had four rebounds, one assist, two steals and two blocks. Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio / Arch Bishop Alter) had 10 points and seven rebounds. Thelen had a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with nine points.
Alma is back in action on Saturday (Dec. 7) when it hosts Albion College at 3:00 p.m.
