Wheaton, Ill. – Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) went off for 25 points and 14 rebounds as the Alma College women's basketball team handed Wisconsin Lutheran College a 69-63 season-opening loss on Friday (Nov. 15) afternoon in the first game of the Wheaton College Beth Baker Classic. The junior center also added one assist, one steal and three blocks and made all seven of her free throw attempts.
The Scots (2-1) rebounded from a poor shooting performance their last time out by making nearly 50 percent of their shots from the field and 43 percent of its threes. Alma also heavily outrebounded the Warriors 38-22 and outscored them 15-3 on second-chance points.
Alma began to open up a double-digit lead in the second quarter with a 15-5 run. It took its biggest lead of 16 points in the middle of the third when Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich. / Pewamo-Westphalia) made a three to cap a 16-5 run.
Wisconsin Lutheran crept back to within four points in the middle of the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run. With under two minutes left, the Warriors got to within three after an and-1 from Jenna Mace but the Scots stopped them from getting any closer. Brandt got her own and-1 a minute later to seal the victory.
Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) was the only other Alma player in double figures. She had 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting and three 3-pointers. Thelen and Madison Hill (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) both played all 40 minutes and totaled 14 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds and two blocks together.
The Scots will take on the winner of the Wheaton/Lake Forest game in tomorrow's Beth Baker Classic Championship Game.
