Incoming class for women's basketball team announced

Alma, Mich. - Eight student-athletes have committed to attend Alma College and become a part of the women's basketball team in the fall of 2016, it was announced today (Friday, May 26) by Head Coach Kris Johnson.

The women's basketball program will enter its third year with Johnson at the helm. Johnson continues to add promise to the Scots after amassing a 9-16 record in 2015-16, the highest win total for the program since the 2008-09 campaign. Along with the help of these eight incoming athletes, Johnson continues to rebuild the program to be a dominant force in the Michigan intercollegiate Athletic Association.

"We are very excited for this talented group of young women to join our basketball family," Johnson said. "They are smart, driven and will each add so much to our program and to Alma College."

Following is the list of student-athletes that have committed to join the Scots this fall:

 

Mia Harvey
Hometown: Grand Rapids, Mich.
High School: Forest Hills Northern High School
Position: Guard
Height: 5-7

Highlights: A member of the varsity basketball team from 2013-16 .. Two-time all-conference honorable mention, first team all-american ... Earned second place in 2014 U.S. junior nationals ... Received team most valuable player award ... A member of the Global Learners Initiative.

Why Alma?: "I chose to attend Alma College because I absolutely love the Alma atmosphere and can not think of a better place where I would rather continue my basketball career."

 

Madison Hill
Hometown: Midland, Mich.
High School: Bullock Creek High School 
Position: Point Guard
Height 5-5

Highlights: A member of the varsity basketball team under head coach Justin Freeland ... Earned a district championship, conference championship, regional championship and made it to the MHSAA Final Four .. Received first team all-district, honorable mention for Midland Daily News dream team and received the Woman Athlete of the Year award ... A member of the National Honor Society, student union, journalism club and was three-time all-academic.

Why Alma?: "I chose to attend Alma College because academically and athletically it seemed like the perfect fit for me. I want to major in nursing and I have heard nothing but great things concerning the nursing program that Alma has to offer."

 

Jessica Jordan
Hometown: Mason, Mich.
High School: Williamston High School
Position: Forward
Height: 5-10

Highlights: A member of the varsity basketball team from 2012-2016 ... Earned high school honor roll. 

Why Alma?: "I chose to attend Alma College because of the academic opportunities and the chance to play basketball."

 

 

 

 

Allison Karpinski 
Hometown: Royal Oak, Mich.
High School: Royal Oak High School
Position: Forward
Height 5-9

Highlights: A member of the varsity basketball team for the 2012-15 season under head coach Brian Sopata ... Helped the team to a conference championship ... Earned two-time all-conference, fifth team all-Oakland country, Detroit News all-area honorable mention ... Named to Oakland county's top 50 players ... Earned teams most valuable player award and was team captain ... Graduated Magna Cum Laude, a member of the National Honor Society and received an Outstanding Citizenship Award ... A member of the yearbook and was a Polish dancer.

Why Alma?: "I chose to attend Alma College because there's a really encouraging atmosphere here. Everyone seems so motivated and determined to do the best they can and help each other out along the way."

 

 

Ashtyn Maniez
Hometown: St.Louis, Mich.
High School: St. Louis High School
Position: Guard
Height: 5-6

Highlights: A member of the varsity basketball team under head coach Jennifer Jaeck ... Three-time conference champions, three-time district champions and two-time regional champions ... Earned first team all-conference ... Earned team awards - most valuable player, best defensive player, best offensive player and the black and blue award.  

Why Alma?: "I chose to attend Alma College because it is only 10 minutes away from my hometown. Although distance played a huge role in my decision making process, Alma has also given me the opportunity to continue my love for basketball. I am excited to attend Alma because I know I will create lasting relationships with the staff and student community."

Hometown: Fenton, Mich.
High School: Fenton High School
Position: Point Guard
Height: 5-5

Highlights: A member of the varsity basketball team and helped the team to two-time district championships and one regional championships ... Earned State Bank Athlete of the Week honors, all-conference honorable mention ... Named team captain, three-time scholar athlete and received three-time High Scholastic honors ... Member of National Honor Society.

Why Alma?: "I chose to attend Alma College because of rigorous academics that will prepare me for medical school and the competitive athletics."

 

Laura Smith
Hometown: Pittsford, Mich.
High School: Pittsford High School
Position: Guard
Height: 5-7

Highlights: A member of the varsity basketball team under head coach Chris Hodos ... Helped her team win three district championships, two regional championships and one state championship this past season in 2015-16 ... Earned all-conference honorable mention, all-conference second team, all-conference first team, Hillsdale County Dream Team and Detroit Free Press all-state honorable mention ... Received all-state academic honors ... Member of the National Honor Society, drama club, student council, Future Corps and Youth Opportunities Unlimited.

Why Alma?: "I chose to attend Alma College because I love the tight knit community. I loved how as soon as I stepped on to campus, it felt like home."

 

Hannah Thelen
Hometown: Pewamo, Mich.
High School: Pewamo-Westphalia High School
Position: Guard
Height: 5-6

Highlights: A member of the varsity team under head coach Steve Eklund ... Helped the team to two-time conference championships and one district championship ... Three-time team most valuable player award ... Earned three-time first team all-conference, two-time first team all-county, two time all-state honorable mention, two-time BCAM first team, two-time Detroit News honorable mention, two-time Lansing State Journal all-area and Detroit Free Press sixth team.

Why Alma?: I chose to attend Alma College because I thought it was a good fit for me. When I visited the campus I immediately fell in love with it.
