On Thursday night, the Alma College women's basketball team continued their 2013-14 season by hosting MIAA foe Albion College at Art Smith Arena. The visiting Britons built a 20-point halftime lead and held on to defeat the host Scots by a final score of 74-63.
Alma finished the contest with an overall record of 0-14 and 0-5 in the MIAA, while Albion left town with a mark of 1-3 in the MIAA and 5-8 for the season.
A disturbing trend of the season happened again as Albion jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first 5:10 of the game before Alma was able to make a basket. A jumper by Fr. F Morgan Seaberg (North Muskegon/North Muskegon) ended the home team's drought but did not help the team's shooting woes.
The Scots' shooting in the first frame was colder than the mid-Michigan night and the team fought an uphill battle throughout the first 20 minutes. Trailing 16-2, Jr. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming/Ishpeming) hit a three-pointer but a long drought for the home team would ensue.
Albion held a 21-5 advantage when Alma next scored, over 10 minutes later in the half when So. F Faith Weier (Lake Fenton/Lake Fenton) hit a lay-up at 5:36. The Britons would outscore the Scots by a margin of 19-13 the remainder of the half to take a 40-20 lead into the break.
If moral victories existed, the Scots would have a "W" after the final 20 minutes. They outscored the Britons by a margin of 43-34 and were a tenacious bunch through the last 12 minutes of the game.
The second half began with the teams basically exchanging baskets as Albion led 52-29 with 12:04 remaining in the game. It was at this point where the Scots found some extra energy and started to cut into the deficit.
The Scots went on a 19-8 run to cut Albion's lead to 60-48 after a three-point play by So. F Raeanna Zink (Birch Run/Frankenmuth) at the 6:19 mark. However, Alma could never cut it to less than 12 points until the game was already decided, as Albion tightened their defense and put the clamps on any comeback.
The margin of defeat for Alma finished at 11 points as Albion walked off the court with the 74-63 victory.
The Scots were led in scoring by So. G Kassidi Adams (Montrose/Montrose) who finished the night with 16 points, while Pruett had 12 and Zink added 11. Pruett also had a team-high eight rebounds while Fr. G Nicole Green (Portland/Portland) contributed six boards and game-best five assists.
Alma will continue their quest for the first victory of the season when they travel to Calvin College on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
