Women's Hoops drops 78-65 decision to visiting Defiance College

Wednesday night against Defiance College (OH) marked the beginning of the home portion of the Alma College women's basketball program's 2013-14 season. The Scots entered the contest looking for their first win of the season, while the Yellow Jackets were playing in their first game of the year.

Defiance, using an impressive second half, spoiled the Scots' home-opener by defeating Alma 78-65 at Art Smith Arena. Alma dropped to 0-3 with the loss, while the Yellow Jackets are now 1-0 on the young season.

The first half was competitive throughout with neither team really establishing dominance. The Scots scored the first basket of the game when Fr. F Erica Hansen (Mt. Pleasant/Sacred Heart) made it 2-0 50 seconds in.

The game was 5-5 before Defiance opened up a 11-5 advantage at the 15:04 mark. From there, the Yellow Jackets maintained a consistent five to eight point lead and led 25-18 with 5:09 left in the frame.

A 9-0 Alma run gave the Scots their second lead of the game, 27-25, when Jr. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming/Ishpeming) hit a three pointer. The two teams exchanged baskets from there and headed into halftime tied at 30-30.

The second half continued to be competitive as both teams made a case for earning the victory. Pruett hit a jumper with 11:59 remaining in the game to give the Scots a 52-47 lead but a 12-0 Defiance run decidedly switched the tone of the contest. The Yellow Jackets found themselves ahead 59-52 at the 8:08 mark and it was uphill from there for Alma.

Hansen hit a lay-up with 5:47 to close the gap to 64-61, but just seconds later is was a seven-point deficit again for the home team. Defiance put their foot on the pedal from that point and grounded out the final 13-point victory at 78-65.

Pruett and So. G Kassidi Adams (Montrose/Montrose) led the Scots with 17 points a piece, while Fr. G Tara Padgett (Freeland/Freeland) was next with 10 points in 18 minutes of play. In total, eight different players had points for Alma in the loss.

Adams also led Alma on the boards with seven, five assists and four steals, while Pruett and Hansen each had five rebounds. Fr. G Nicole Green (Portland/Portland) notched five helpers as well for the Scots.

The Scots continue their season on Friday night when they host Lakeland College (WI) at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
