Naperville, Ill. - Kyle Kraus (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple-Kellogg) of the Alma College track and field team sits in seventh place after Day 1 of the men's decathlon at North Central College's Gregory Invitational on Wednesday (May 15).
The first day of the decathlon consists of the 100-meter dash, the long jump, the shot put, the high jump and the 400-meter dash; Kraus set a new personal best in four of the five events. He took first place in the shot put with a put of 12.35 meters on his third attempt and second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.87 meters.
Kraus placed tenth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.90 seconds and 12th in both the long jump at 5.87 meters and the 400-meter dash at 53.28 seconds. The only event he did not post a new personal best was in the long jump.
The decathlon continues on Thursday (May 16) with the 110-meter hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin and the 1500 meter dash. Also scheduled to compete is Lauren Kucharczyk (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) and Stephanie Davis (Elmira, Mich. / Gaylord) in the women's 100 meter hurdles, Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich / Lumen Christi) in the men's 110 meter hurdles and Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich / Benzie Central) in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase.
