Alma, Mich. - Alma College track and field hosted the Jim Cole Scottie Open on Friday, April 14th. Both the men's and women's teams finished second in team points on the day.
Senior Kathleen Collingwood (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central) broke the school record for the hammer throw, placing third in the event with a toss of 44.87 meters.
Juniors Chelse Van Spronsen (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison), Hannah Garn (Charlotte, Mich. / Charlotte) and Karen Flesh (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) each came away from an event with a victory: the 5000-meter run, 10,000-meter run, and the shot put respectively.
Freshman Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich. / Saginaw Nouvel) took the long jump with a final jump of 6.09 meters.
Sophomore Kyle Kraus (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple-Kellogg) won the triple jump, jumping 12.40 meters, while also finishing second in the long jump.
The women's 4x400 meter team of sophomore Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich. / Ithaca), junior Shannon Kievit (Lewiston, Mich. / Johannesburg-Lewiston), freshman Ruslana Gill (New Boston, Mich / Huron), and senior Kaitlyn Arnold (Jackson, Mich. / Jackson Northwest) finished in 4:23.01 for a second-place rank. Arnold also took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.46.
The men's 4x100 meter team of freshmen Kendric Powell (Macon, GA / Macon Central) and John Mitrzyk and sophomores John Vusich (Perrinton, Mich. / Fulton) and Essa Kellah (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights) earned second place, finishing in 43.81 seconds. Kellah also finished second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.33 seconds.
The Alma College track and field team will spend next week idle as students will begin their week of finals. The team will then travel to Grand Rapids the following week for the Calvin College Invitational on Friday, April 28th.
