Defiance, Ohio – The Alma College track and field team made the early-morning bus ride to the George M. Smart Athletic Center to compete in the Defiance College Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 28). The women's team tied for the lead on the day while the men finished fourth of ten teams.
The most impressive performance on the day for the Scots came in the distance medley relay. The quartet of sophomore Mallory Munderloh (St. Louis, Mich./St. Louis), junior Shannon Kievit (Lewiston, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston), freshman Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca), and senior Kaitlyn Arnold (Jackson, Mich./Jackson Northwest) finished 48 seconds ahead of the competition with a time of 12:49.02.
Other victories on the women's side included sophomore Erin Goggins with another jump of 3.20 meters in the pole vault, junior Chelse Van Spronsen (Jension, Mich./Jension) with a 11:00.51 in the 3000-meter run, and junior Hannah Garn (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte) with a 19:21.30 in the 5000-meter run.
For the men's team, senior Justin Larkins (Livonia, Mich./Livonia-Franklin) came away victorious from the pole vault with a jump of 3.80 meters, freshman Payton Hirschenburger (Freeland, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) placed third in the triple jump at 10.81 meters, and junior Zane Berlanga (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) finished third in the 3000-meter run.
In addition, the 800-meter relay team of freshman Kendric Powell (Macon, Ga./Macon Central), sophomore John Vusich (Perrington, Mich. / Fulton), sophomore Essa Kellah (Grand Rapids, Mich./Godwin Heights), and junior Jackson Conner (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins) finished second with a time of 1:37.20.
The track and field team will be idle next week and return to action Friday February 10th at Aquinas College for the Aquinas College Little Meet.
