Grand Rapids - Freshman Nate Sutton (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) broke two school records on the final day of the MIAA Championship meet on Saturday (Feb. 22) from Calvin University. Sutton finished second overall in the 1650 freestyle and had a time of 16:18.41, breaking the old school record held by Eric Ferrara by 20 seconds. His time at the 1000 meter mark of 9:51.84 also broke his own record he set earlier this season.
In the final team standings, the men finished in sixth place with 187 points, while the women's team finished in fifth place with 246 points. Albion College won the men's MIAA team title with 933.5 points, while Calvin University won the women's event with 867 points.
Sophomore Jennifer Ostrowski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) finished in seventh place in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.32. It was the second top eight finish of the meet for Ostrowski, as she had finished in seventh in the 100 yard breaststroke as well. Four women made the finals in the 200 yard breaststroke. They were Ostrowski, Haven Westra (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison), Allie Dilts (Belleville, Mich. / Belleville), and Emily Diener. The four also competed in the 100 yard breaststroke finals as well.
Diener and Ostrowski were also apart of the 400 yard freestyle relay team that finished in sixth place along with sophomores Paige Thompson (Sister Bay, Wisc. / Gibraltar) and Sarah Gaines (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Liberty) with a time of 3:46.37. The men's 400 yard freestyle relay team consisted of Sutton, Sawyer Hill (Wyandotte, Mich. / Wyandotte Roosevelt), Cole Malhoit (Canton, Mich. / Canton), and Josh Mushinski (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill). They finished in sixth place with a time of 3:23.33.
This concludes the 2019-2020 swim and dive season for Alma.
