Tucson, Ariz. - The Alma College softball team finished its trip to Arizona with a 7-6 win over George Fox University (OR) on Sunday (Mar. 8), the last day of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic. The Scots' second game against Babson College (MA) was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Alma spotted the Bruins four runs in the first two innings and got them all back by the third. With Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich. / Coleman) and Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) both got on base with two outs, Kaylee Martin (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) drove in Tucker to get the Scots on the board. Becca Spenner (Berrien Center, Mich. / Lakeshore) followed with a three-run home run, her first of the season, to tie the game.
Alma broke the tie in the fifth inning when Terwilliger singled home Madyson Piche (Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. / Sault Area). Piche plated some much-needed insurance runs in the sixth when she scored Hannah Cambe (Demotte, Ind. / Kankakee Valley) and Jessica Eva (Morrice, Mich. / Morrice) with a single.
George Fox picked up two runs in the top of the seventh, but Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) came in to close the game, striking out two batters and earning her first career save.
The Scots' next game will be at home for the first time this season. Alma will host Heidelberg University (OH) on Tuesday, March 17, at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
