Tucson, Ariz. - The Alma College softball team split a pair of games on Saturday (Mar. 6) on the second day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Scots fell to DePauw University (IN) 1-0 and beat LeTourneau University (TX) 9-3.
Alma battled back against the Yellow Jackets after allowing three first-inning runs. Madyson Piche (Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) doubled home two runs in the second and Hannah Fleming (Rogers City, Mich. / Rogers City) was able to tie the game in the third when she singled home Taylor Griffith (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview). Bry Chapman (Holt, Mich. / Holt) followed with a double to plate Kendall Bird (Holt, Mich. / Holt) and give Alma the lead for good.
Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) hit her second home run of the year in the fourth inning to extend the lead. Hannah Falejczyk (Manhattan, Ill. / Providence Catholic) got in on the action when she doubled home Fleming and Kennedy Koenigsknecht (Fowler, Mich. / Fowler). Terwilliger closed out the scoring when she doubled home Falejczyk.
Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) earned the win, her fourth of the year, after allowing no runs on six hits and one walk. She struck out four Yellow Jackets.
Daniella Little (Wheaton, Ill. / Glenbard South) totaled eight K's in a pitcher's duel against DePauw. Only three times in the game did a player reach third base, including an RBI double in the fourth inning that scored the game's only run. Alma left six runners on base in the game.
The Scots wrap up the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday (Mar. 8) when they face George Fox University (OR) at noon and Babson College (MA) at 2:00 p.m.
