Alma, Mich. - Scots Park on the campus of Alma College will be the site of one of 16 regionals for the 2017 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced today (Monday, May 8) as it revealed the 62-team field that will compete for the national championship. The Scots are making their 20th appearance in the NCAA III Tournament, all under Head Coach Denny Griffin, who is in his 28th season at the helm of the softball program.
The Scots, who won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament championship to receive an automatic bid to the tournament, will face DePauw University (Ill.) in the tournament's opening round. Alma is 27-8 this season, while the Tigers are 23-19 and enter the NCAA Tournament after winning the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament.
The other first-round matchup will feature Illinois Wesleyan University against Otterbein University (Ohio). The Titans, 31-12 overall, received the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's automatic bid after winning the tournament. Otterbein owns a 34-6 record and won the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) tournament to make the tournament.
The regional will begin on Friday, May 12, and will feature a double-elimination format, with the champion being crowned on Sunday, May 14. The winner of the Alma Regional advances to the Super Regional round on May 19-20 and will face the winner of the Berry Regional, which includes Berry College (GA), Thomas More College (KY), Transylvania University (KY) and Emory & Henry College (VA).
Tickets for the regional will be sold on a daily basis and priced as follows: $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and veterans and $3 for students and children under the age of 12. Children age 2 and under are admitted free with a paying adult, per NCAA rules.
