Alma, Mich. - The Alma College softball team won the opening game of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament 5-1 over Saint Mary's on Thursday morning.
Senior Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) picked up her 17th win of the year after allowing one run and three hits over seven innings. Sophomore Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) went 4-for-4 with one RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
The Scots started the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) singled up the middle, scoring Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) and Schweiger. They picked up another run in the fifth when Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) singled to third, scoring Schweiger once more.
Alma picked up two insurance runs in the seventh to seal the victory. Couture hit the game's only extra-base hit, a double to left-center field, bringing home Cassidy Tucker (Coleman, Mich./Coleman). Couture crossed home thanks to a Schweiger single up the middle. Alma hit .352 with runners in scoring position in the game.
The team's next game will be against the winner of Hope and Trine. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 pm on Thursday evening.
