Holland, Mich. - The No. 23 nationally ranked Alma College softball team dropped a pair of games at Hope on Saturday, 2-0 and 3-1 in ten innings.
Though they lost both games, the Scots (24-8, 13-3 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) have earned a spot in the MIAA Tournament and will play Saint Mary's in Holland, the postseason's host site, on Thursday. Alma split the season series against the Belles this year, with Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) getting the win in a 10-2 victory and Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) picking up the loss in a 6-2 defeat on April 15 in Notre Dame, Ind.
Stratton pitched every inning of both games on Saturday and allowed one earned run over 16 innings with 19 strikeouts. She finishes the regular season first in wins (16) in the conference, second in ERA (1.02), complete games (19), shutouts (7) and batting average against (.174), third in strikeouts (138) and fourth in strikeouts per game (7.02). Stratton's shutouts are eleventh best in the nation, her K's per seven innings are the twelfth best and her ERA is 28th best.
Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) scored Alma's only run of the day in the fifth inning of game two. Down 1-0, she singled to third base and was driven in by Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland), who doubled to right field. Brooks ends the regular season second in the MIAA in batting average (.433) and on-base percentage (.485), sixth in slugging percentage (.622) and seventh in RBI (28). Schweiger has the conference's fourth best batting average (.407), sixth most hits (.44) and eighth highest on-base percentage (.443).
Also finishing among the league's best hitters were senior Danielle Service (Mason, Mich./Mason), junior Erin Lee (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) and sophomore Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy).
Service finished second in slugging percentage (.707), fourth in home runs (8), sixth in total bases (70) and batting average (.404) and ninth in hits (40) and on-base percentage (.443).
Lee is eighth in batting average (.387), eleventh in on-base percentage (.433) and thirteenth in slugging percentage (.532).
Terwilliger is eighth in triples (2) twelfth in batting average (.363) and thirteenth in on-base percentage (.426).
As a team, the Scots finished the year with the tenth best ERA (1.45) and the eighteenth best batting average (.351) in all of Division III. As such, they led the conference in both categories and finished second in on-base percentage (.397), slugging percentage (.474), home runs (18) and triples (11). They also struck out the least (92) and allowed the fewest hits (152), runs, both earned (42) and total (64), and walks (45).
Alma will travel to Hope, the MIAA Tournament's host site, to play Saint Mary's on Thursday. The start time has yet to be determined.
