North Manchester, Ind. - Senior Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) pitched a no-hitter in the first game of a non-conference series against Manchester University on Monday afternoon. The Scots, who are now first in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, split the series against the Spartans after an 8-0 victory in the first game before dropping 3-2 in the second.
In the first game, Stratton, who pitched her first no-hitter for the Scots, only walked one player while striking out six others. Stratton improved her record 14-2 for the season, putting her as the MIAA leader for wins. Stratton is also second in the conference for earned run average with 1.17 and fifth for strike outs per seven innings with 6.24.
Also seeing a lot of success in the first game was junior Erin Lee (Commerce, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern). Lee went 4-4 at the plate, recorded two RBI and hit two of the Scots four doubles in the seventh inning. The other two doubles came from senior Anna Couture (Manchester, Mich. / Manchester) and sophomore Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair). Couture went 2-for-3 and had an RBI while Schweiger went 3-for-4 and also had an RBI.
The Scots batted around in the top of the seventh inning of game one and scored its eight runs off nine hits. Lee was the first Scot on base after hitting her first of two doubles to left center. Couture followed up with her own double down the left line, scoring Lee. Schweiger doubled to left-center and brought in Couture. The Scots didn't let up after senior Kelsey Spencer (Eaton Rapids, Mich. / Eaton Rapids) singled off a bunt but advanced to second off an error that allowed Schweiger to score. Spencer would slide into home after sophomore McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) also singled off a bunt. Sophomore Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) reached first with a hit to right-center which brought Creed home. Hitting in the tenth spot was freshman pinch hitter Kaylee Martin (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch), who sliced the ball to right field, scoring senior Danielle Service (Mason, Mich. / Mason) who had a single. Rounding out the scoring for the Scots was Lee who hit her second double of the inning and tallied her second RBI of the game.
The Scots started the second game with the same intensity, scoring their two runs in the top of the first from Couture and Creed. On the mound was junior Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich. / Manchester), pitching five innings. McClure gave up five hits and one walk but had four strikeouts. Stratton came into the game to pitch for the Scots in the sixth inning and gave up one hit. The Scots would hold a 2-1 lead over the Spartans after the fifth inning, but fell 3-2 after the Spartans scored two runs off three hits in the bottom of the sixth.
The Scots return to Scots Park on Thursday (April 27) to host the Adrian College Bulldogs. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
