Alma, Mich. - The Alma College softball team swept the Calvin College Knights 8-0 in five innings in game one and 6-2 in game two. The Scots improve to 18-4 overall and 8-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich. / Portland) continues to lead the conference in batting average (.508) and on base percentage (.551), while she sits third in slugging percentage (.714) behind Danielle Service (Mason, Mich. / Mason), who is at .765.
Game 1 - at Alma 8, Calvin 0 (five innings)
Alma picked up half its runs in the bottom of the third inning. Brooks started the scoring with a single that brought home home Anna Couture (Posen, Mich. / Posen) and Erin Lee (Commerce, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern). Brooks and Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich. / Manchester) came around to score when McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) doubled to right center field.
The Scots mercied Calvin in the bottom of the fifth after back to back home runs by Creed and Service. Brooks hit a double to score Chelsea Schweiger (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair) from third to make the score 5-0. After Kelsey Spencer (Eaton Rapids, Mich. / Eaton Rapids) pinch ran for Brooks, Creed hit her third home run of the year to make it 7-0. Three pitches later, Service launched her sixth home run of the season to end the game. Service is tied for third in the conference in home runs.
Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) allowed three hits in five innings, her sixth game this season allowing three or fewer hits in over five innings pitched.
Game 2 - at Alma 6, Calvin 2
In the second game, the Scots batted first and started strong by scoring five runs in the first inning. Couture led off with a double to right field with Schweiger following behind with a single. Brooks brought Couture home after reaching on an infield single. Batting fifth, Creed scored both Brooks and Schweiger after hitting straight down the left field line, registering her fifth and sixth RBIs of the day. Creed would slide into home after Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) found an empt spot in center field. Rounding out the scoring was Service, who reached first on an error, when Averi Munro (Morrice, Mich. / Morrice) grounded out to shortstop.
Alma's last run was scored by Couture in the top of the fourth after McClure hit the ball straight up the middle. Couture was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
McClure pitched the entire seven innings allowing six hits and only earning one run.
Alma Hits the road for its next series. It will play Saint Mary's (Ind.) on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
