Softball Sweeps Albion with a Pair of 8-0 Wins

Albion, Mich. - The Alma College softball team allowed three hits in two games, sweeping the Albion Britons in a pair of 8-0 games on Saturday afternoon. Alma improves its record to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, while Albion falls to 6-14 and 0-2.

Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) won game one after allowing two hits in six innings and striking out nine batters, one off her season high. She is the current conference leader in ERA at 0.91 and is fourth in strikeouts per seven innings at 7.57. Katie McClure (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) gave up one hit in five innings and struck out eight in game two, tying her season high for K's. McClure is striking out 6.81 batters per game, fifth in the MIAA, and has a 1.99 ERA, eighth in the conference.

"It was great to get out and play again and start the league season 2-0," said Head Coach Denny Griffin. "Great pitching by Stratton and McClure. Service and Kayla Holz (Bad Axe, Mich./Bad Axe) called a super game behind the plate. Good offense executing the short game and long ball."

Danielle Service (Mason, Mich./Mason) hit two home runs on the day, tying her for third in the conference with five. She also leads the conference in slugging percentage at .833. Service's first shot came in the first game in the fourth inning of game one; it gave the Scots a 3-0 lead. Her second came in the second inning of game two, after a McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) single. Service has five home runs and 16 RBI this year; she had two home runs and 20 RBI last year.

Anna Couture (Posen, Mich./Posen) went 3-for-6 on the day, all extra base hits. She hit her first home run of the year to lead off the fifth inning of game two. It began a five-run inning that gave Alma its third five-inning win this season.

Erin Lee (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) went 5-for-6 on Saturday, giving her the team lead in batting average at .516 and on-base percentage at .559. Mary Brooks (Portland, Mich./Portland) went 4-for-6 with a double and two RBI.

The team is scheduled to play on Tuesday, April 4 against Kalamazoo in its home opener.
