Alma vs. Bluffton Softball Postponed

ALMA, Mich. - Alma softball has postponed its game with Bluffton this Saturday, scheduled to be played in Bluffton, Ohio. A make-up date has not yet been confirmed.

Alma College softball is off to a tepid 9-7 start through two trips to Florida – first to the Gene Cusic Classic Feb. 25 – Mar. 2 and at the NFCA Leadoff Classic Mar. 9-11 in Panama City, Fla.

Alma opened the season with a 12-4 loss to Concorida-St. Paul then rattled off four wins against Mercyhurst, Augustana, Capital and a 6-2 win against Concordia-St. Paul. But still in Ft. Myers at the Gene Cusic Classic, the Scots dropped two straight – a 9-1 loss to Mercyhurst (after beating them 4-1) and a 7-2 loss to Capital after winning 7-5 earlier in the week. The Scots closed strong for the trip, defeating Augustana 3-2, Johnson & Wales 11-0 and Indiana Tech 3-2 to walk away from the annual Florida trip with a 7-3 overall record.

The NFCA Leadoff Classic was held in Panama City, Fla., and is held just once every three years, hosted by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. It attracts some of the top teams in the nation and this year was no exception.

Alma finished 2-4 in the tournament, splitting a pair of games on the final day by beating defending national champion Rutgers-Camden 3-0 and dropping the second game to Coe College 8-2.

Early in the season, some things about this year's Scots are clear. The team is 0-6 when they score less than two runs, but have lost just one game in which the team has scored more than 3 runs. Attesting to the youth of this season's Scots, Alma is 0-5 when trailing after six innings and 7-0 when leading.

The Scots have record double-digit hits three times this season - including 13 in the rematch against Concordia-St. Paul. Just four players have started all four games of the season - freshman Sarah Johnson who is batting .340 in 50 at bats with 17 hits, three doubles and nine RBI, Amy Gaudard, Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge), and Missy Morcom.

Alma is next scheduled to play Northwood at home on March 21 at 2:30 p.m. and has tentatively scheduled a make-up date with Bluffton of March 22.
