Missy Morcom Knocks Home Runs in Both Games As Scots Continue Win Streak

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College softball continued its winning streak, extending it to eight games with 9-1 and 4-0 wins against visiting St. Mary's College Saturday at Scots Park. Led by junior Missy Morcom's (Chelsea) home runs in back-to-back games, the Scots moved to 17-7 on the season and 4-0 on the season in the MIAA.

Alma opened the first game with an eight-run first inning when, with two outs, Alma put up eight runs on seven hits with just one error by the Belles. The eight runs came with a single from Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) followed by a Sarah Johnson (Portland) single and a Brittany Fales (Midland/Dow) RBI single, scoring Gaudard. A walk to Houston Verbeck (Flint/Kearsley) loaded the bases for Emily Blahnik (Corunna) who hit a two-RBI single with Fales and Johnson scoring. A wild pitch allowed Verbeck to score and Blahnik to move to third. A Trista Geier (West Bloomfield/Walled Lake Western) walk put runners at the corners as Taylor Erwin (Fenton) hit an RBI double to score Blahnik. With Geier and Erwin aboard, Missy Morcom stepped in and nailed a shot over the left field fence to end the scoring for the inning before a Gaudard fly out to center field.

The Scots tacked on one more run in the second inning with a Johnson single up the middle, moving to second with a sacrifice bunt from Fales and scoring when an error at first base allowed Johnson to score with two outs. Geier would make the final out of the inning to give Alma a 9-0 lead. St. Mary's only run came in the top of the fifth but it was not enough to get away from the eight-run mercy rule as the game ended after St. Mary's at-bat in the fifth.

On the mound, Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant) went five innings, striking out eight and scattering five hits while allowing just one run.

In the second game, Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./North) made the start on the mound, going four innings scattering four hits and striking out two while McDonald made an appearance in relief, going three innings and striking out four while allowing three hits.

Alma scored one run in the first, two in the fourth and an insurance run in the fifth to win 4-0.

The first run came on the first Alma at bat with Missy Morcom stepping in and launching another ball over the left field fence for her second home run of the day. In the fourth and with one out, Seals walked and Erwin singled to put two on base. Another walk, this time to hot-hitting Morcom loaded the bases. An error in center field put Kasey Miller on base and allowed Seals and Erwin to score for the inning's two runs.

The final run of the day came in the fifth inning with a lead off double from Fales. With one out, Fales moved to third on a wild pitch. Emily Blahnik then knocked a single to plate Fales. A Seals sacrifice and Erwin strike out would end the inning and the scoring for the Scots.

Alma returns to action April 3 when it hosts Adrian College at 3:30 p.m. in another MIAA match-up.
