Alma Splits Thursday Action Against Capital and Augustana

The Alma College softball team continued play at the Gene Cusic Tournament in Ft. Myers, Fla., on Thursday losing to Capital University 7-2 and edging Augustana College 3-2. The Scots are now 5-3 on the Florida trip.

Against Capital University Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./North) dropped her second loss of the season going the distance giving up seven hits and striking out two. Capital struck in the first inning scoring two runs on three hits. The Scots rebounded with two of their own with Missy Morcom (Chelsea) lacing a single to left field and stole second base one pitch later. Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge) reached base on a walk and Amy Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant) moved them up with a sacrifice bunt. Emily Blahnik (Corunna) looped a single to right scoring Morcom and Miller reached home on a passed ball.

Capital scored two runs in the third and fifth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth to close out the scoring. Gaudard led the team in offense going 2-3 including a triple.

In a rematch with Augustana College the Scots pushed two runs across in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Taylor Erwin (Fenton) and Kelsey Rightenburg (Lexington/Croswell-Lexington) had back-to-back bunt singles and Morcom sacrificed them up a base. With two outs Gaudard hit a double to center field to put the Scots up for good.

Earlier in the game Morcom led off the first inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Miller. Blahnik laced a single to right to knot the score at one apiece. Kay McDonald (Rosebush/Mt. Pleasant) pitched her third win of the week going seven innings, striking out nine on a two hitter. Erwin and Gaudard led the offense with two hits a piece.

The Scots conclude their spring trip Friday with two more games against Johnson and Wales and Indiana Institute of Technology.
