Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's tennis team wrapped up the 2018 season on Friday, April 27. The men finished 8-11 overall, 2-5 in conference play.
Alma opened their season with two road wins at Holy Cross and Albion Colleges. The Scots saw the height of their season when they went on a four-match win streak in late February, including an 8-1 victory against Defiance College. They rounded out the season with a 9-0 blanking of Olivet College to close out the 2018 campaign.
Five seniors will graduate from the men's tennis program: BJ Schutte (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison), Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich. / Munising), Tristen Fox (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt), Luke Van Fleet (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford), and Quinn Summerfield (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell). Schutte and Ackerman both earned accolades at the end of the season, Schutte being named to the All-MIAA Second Team for his performance in No. 1 singles and doubles, and Ackerman receiving the Allen B. Stowe Memorial Award for sportsmanship.
Ackerman also tied for the most singles wins for the second year in a row, earning a perfect 5-0 record at the No. 2 spot, and going 5-9 at No. 3. Other senior standout performances include Summerfield going 5-10 with Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) and a perfect 3-0 Jadon House (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) in the No. 3 doubles matches, and Van Fleet playing all 19 matches at the No. 1 doubles spot, earning a 5-9 record with Schutte and 3-2 with Tristen Fox (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt).
As the sole freshman on the team, Ralston tied for the team-best in singles wins with 10. He compiled a 6-8 record at No. 5 singles and went 4-1 in the No. 4 spot. In addition, he played at No. 2 doubles with Ackerman and played 14 matches at No. 3 doubles.
The Scots are coached by Chris Sandro, in his 12th season with the men's team.
