Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Adrian College on Wednesday afternoon (April 11) as the Scots played their second match in as many days.
Senior BJ Schutte (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was responsible for two of Alma's three points, capturing victories at No. 1 singles and teaming with junior Luke Van Fleet (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) for a triumph at No. 1 doubles.
Senior Tristen Fox (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) and senior Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) helped the Scots (7-9 overall, 1-3 MIAA) win two of the three doubles contests in the match, posting an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
How It Happened
- The Scots opened the match taking two of the three doubles contests. After Tristen Fox and Noah Ackerman won the No. 2 doubles match, Adrian came back to grab an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles over the team of Brandon Ralston and Quinn Summerfield.
- Alma took a 2-1 lead after winning the No. 1 doubles match in a tiebreaker, as BJ Schutte and Luke Van Fleet won 9-8, including 7-5 in the extra session.
- In singles action, Adrian posted straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to gain a 5-2 lead and secure the victory.
- The final two matches, however, were full of tension. At No. 2 singles, Van Fleet pushed his opponent to a match tiebreaker, while at No. 1 singles, Schutte won his first top-flight match of the season, topping Adrian's Ronald Ducharme with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win.
The Scots close out their three-game homestand on Saturday, April 14, hosting Trine University. The match will begin at 4 p.m. in the Stone Recreation Center in order to avoid inclement weather.
