Even Game Ends in Overtime Heartbreak for Men’s Soccer

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat in overtime to Defiance College (OH) on Wednesday (Sept. 18).

The game was as even as it could be nearly the entire way. Two shots, two corner kicks and four fouls separated the Scots and Yellow Jackets, as well as the one goal. When Defiance scored in the 80th minute, Danten McFate (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) answered less than two minutes later off a corner kick. Brandon McDaniel (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow) sent a low cross right in front of the net. McFate fielded it on a bounce and tapped it past the Defiance keeper to tie the game at one with eight minutes remaining.

Early in the first overtime, Defiance's Armando Campos-Ortiz was able to get a sliding shot off that Jose Vicario (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Kelloggsville High School) couldn't handle. It slipped past the freshman keeper for the game-winning goal.

Vicario played the entire second half and overtime and made two saves on four shots. Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) stopped all three shots he faced in the first half.

The Scots had five shots on goal from five different players in the game. Hunter Nash (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) led all players with three total shots. Possession over the course of the game was split 50-50.

Alma has 10 days off before its next game. It will host Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Sept. 28) at 2:30 p.m.
