Alma, Mich. - The men's soccer team dropped its first game of the year on Tuesday (Sept. 5) afternoon to Aquinas College by a score of 2-0. With the loss, the Scots fall to 0-1-1 on the year while Aquinas improves to 4-1.
Alex Mendez scored both goals for the Saints, the first coming in the 29th minute and the second coming in the 76th minute.
- Aquinas's first goal came when Mendez fired a shot from inside the right side of the box. The ball was slightly deflected by an Alma defender, but not enough to stop it from going past sophomore keeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven).
- Aquinas extended its lead in the second half when the ball bounced around before falling to Mendez's foot in roughly the same spot as his first goal. He ripped a shot to the back post for his fourth goal of the year.
- Aquinas' Franco Calabrese was given a yellow card in the 65th minute for unsporting behavior.
Alma takes to the road for its first away contest of the year on Friday, Sept. 8 when it will take on Benedictine at 5:30 p.m.
