Adrian, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team defeated Adrian College 1-0 on Wednesday evening, with freshman Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scoring the only goal of the game. Halfway through conference play, the Scots (8-3-1, 4-2-1 MIAA) are now second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with 13 points, one point ahead of both Adrian and Albion and eight points behind Calvin.
Canlas' goal came in the 36th minute off a turnover by Adrian (6-5, 4-3 MIAA) keeper Spencer Brown. Brown had the ball on the end line and made an errant pass to a teammate. The ball was stolen in the box by Canlas who shot to the back post and scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Freshman keeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven), in his second start of the year, was only forced to make two saves in the contest thanks to a stifling Alma defense. His most impressive save came in the 73rd minute. Adrian's Zachary Roller sent a corner kick to the near post where Dolan Bonkowski shot a header to the ground that nearly bounced inside the near top corner of the net. But Mast stayed with the ball off the bounce and punched it away to maintain the lead.
Following the game, Alma's defense, one of the best in the MIAA, maintains its position of second place in goals allowed (seven), goals against average (0.57), saves (71) and shutouts (seven).
The Scots return to action on Saturday, October 8 when they travel to Hope to begin the second round of conference play. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
