Alma Men's Soccer beats Albion 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday

On a very cold and windy early October afternoon, the Alma College Men's Soccer team defeated MIAA foe Albion College by a score of 2-1 in overtime. The Scots improved their league record to 2-5-1 and their overall mark to 6-7-1, while the visiting Britons fell to 0-8 in the MIAA and 1-12 in 2012.

In a game between two teams trying to turn around their seasons in the second half of the schedule, the hometown Scots struck first at the 11:15 mark. Fr. M Julian Birge (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) scored his second goal of the season on an assist by So. D David Gettel (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere) for the 1-0 lead.

Albion would knot the game at 1-1 when Mike Tolkacz scored on a rebound off an Alma Jr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) save at 36:24 and the two teams headed into halftime deadlocked.

The Scots controlled most of the flow in a scoreless second half, outshooting Albion by a margin of 11-5, including four to two in shots on goal. However, neither team could pierce the back of the net and the game advanced to overtime.

It didn't take long in overtime for the Scots to tally the game-winning goal, as So. M/F Michael Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) headed in a cross from Fr. M Matt Sovis (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) just 3:46 into the extra frame.

The goal enabled Alma to walk off the pitch with the 2-1 victory and now the team will focus on playing at Hope College on Saturday evening.

Wallace finished with five saves to earn the victory in net, while Birge paced the Scots with three shots on goal. Four other Scots each had a shot on net in the win, including Smith, Sovis, Gettel and Fr. F/M Jared Niec (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd).
