Scots Men's Soccer on short end of a 1-0 score against Hope on Tuesday

On a chilly mid-September afternoon, the Alma Men's Soccer team hosted Hope College in a key early season MIAA contest at Scotland Yard on Tuesday. In a tight defensive battle, the visiting Flying Dutchmen defeated the Scots by a score of 1-0 to improve to 2-0 in the league and 5-2 overall. Alma is now 1-1 in the MIAA and 5-3 in 2012.

"Our guys defended well today and we were very unlucky not to be awarded a pk in the first minute of the game," said Alma Head Coach Josh Oakley. "Our guys executed our plan today and quite honestly, I believe the game could have gone either way. We did absorb a good deal of pressure today, but we expected that from them. In the end, I feel we did enough to perhaps earn a point."

In the first half, Hope had a total of 13 shots (four shots on goal) to Alma's six (two SOG) as the Flying Dutchmen supplied constant pressure. But, neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the game went into halftime tied at 0-0.

The Scots settled in a bit more in the second half and had three shots on goal to Hope's four, but could not score. The Flying Dutchmen notched the only goal of the game at 70:56, when Jonathan DeVries beat Alma Jr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) for the decisive score.

So. D/M Joonas Kotka (Tallinn, Estonia) paced the Scots with two shots on goal, while Fr. M Chad Buitentiuis (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) and Fr. M Matt Sovis (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) each had one shot on goal in the loss. Wallace finished with seven total saves in another solid day in net.

Alma continues the season on Saturday afternoon, when they host Kalamazoo College in another MIAA tilt at Scotland Yard. Start time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and will be approximately 30 minutes after the women's game which begins at Noon.
