The Alma College Men's Soccer team concluded a two game trip to Ohio with a thrilling 2-1 two overtime victory over host Defiance College on Sunday afternoon. The win evens the team's 2012 record to 1-1 as they will now get ready to host Andrews University on Thursday at Scotland Yard, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
"Overall, I am very satisfied with this weekend, as our players battled both physical and mental fatigue," said Head Coach Josh Oakley. "With how young our guys are, it's good that we saw they operated in a close contest. I am extremely proud of the guys and every player that came on the trip played some minutes except for the backup goalies. We definitely have stuff to work on, but we are happy with the two days and we will get back to the field on Tuesday."
The Scots got on the board first when Fr. F Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids, Mich./Elk Rapids) found the back of the net at the 9:33 mark. Defiance tied it at 1-1 at 30:52 on a goal by Kevin Arriola and the two teams went into halftime deadlocked.
Neither team was able to score during the second half and through the first overtime. However, So. M/F Nathan Brown (Midland, Mich./Midland) came up huge for the Scots in the second extra frame, scoring at the 107:46 mark. The goal gave the visitors the big 2-1 road victory and sent them home with a split of the weekend's two games. Alma lost to Greenville 1-0 on Saturday.
Defensively, Jr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) was again solid in front of the net, securing six saves in the victory.
