Alma, Mich. - Freshman Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year, it was announced today (Tuesday, May 2) as the league revealed the All-MIAA Teams for the 2017 season. Hunyadi, along with three other players from Alma College, also received All-MIAA recognition.
Hyundai is the second player from Alma College to win the Rookie of the Year award, joining Jared Nycz (Elma, N.Y./Iriquois), who earned the honor a year ago. Hunyadi finished the conference season ranked third overall with 22 goals and 15 assists for 37 points, and was the top point-getter among first-year players against league opponents. Hunyadi was also named to the All-MIAA Second Team as an attacker.
Nycz received All-MIAA First Team accolades for the second straight year after tallying 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points against MIAA foes to rank second for assists and points. Nycz recorded three hat tricks and posted four or more points in five of the seven league games.
Junior Austen Irrer (Midland, Mich./Midland) and sophomore Max Linscott (Columbus, Ohio/New Albany) were also named to the All-MIAA Second Team. Irrer, a midfielder, scored a goal in every conference game and registered an assist all but one contest to rank 14th in total points. Linscott, who started every game on defense, ranked fourth in the league with 14 caused turnovers against MIAA opponents. He also collected 20 ground balls.
Alma (11-5 overall, 6-2 MIAA) finished the regular season tied for second in the MIAA and is the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 4. The Scots, who are in the postseason for the third straight season, will travel to No. 2 Hope College for a 7:00 p.m. contest at Van Andel Stadium, with the winner advancing to the championship game on Saturday, May 6.
