Buchy, Hunyadi notch MIAA records in win at Calvin

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College men's lacrosse team posted a 22-11 win at Calvin College on Tuesday (April 25) evening behind a school-record nine goals from junior Daniel Buchy (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro). The Scots (10-5 overall, 4-2 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) also remained in the hunt for a spot in the MIAA Tournament with one game to play.

Buchy scored twice in the opening quarter, twice in the second quarter and four times in the third quarter, then added a man-up goal in the fourth en route to tying the MIAA record for goals in a game, which was set by Adrian's Cody Kilcoyne in 2013.

Freshman Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) also set a pair of MIAA records in the win, tallying 12 assists and scoring a pair of goals for a total of 14 points. The mark bested sophomore Jared Nycz's (Elma, N.Y./Iriquois) record of nine assists and 12 points, set last season against Calvin. Ironically enough, Nycz also posted 12 points in the win with five goals and seven assists and now has scored eight goals and registered 16 assists for 24 points in two career games against Calvin.

"It was an awesome day for the offense," Head Coach Michael Kinney said. "It's great to see our attach line execute so well. When we look at our attack guys on paper we knot they can put up a ton of points so it's nice to see the production. We had a good day and we will keep working to improve with a young defense."

Junior Austen Irrer (Midland, Mich./Midland) tallied his second hat trick of the season with three goals while freshman Sam McCumber (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) scored twice for Alma.

The Scots led 10-6 at the half and blew the game wide-open in the third quarter, netting eight goals to lead by an 18-8 margin after 45 minutes.

Sophomore Cam Stelljes (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) made five saves on 16 shots on net to get the victory, while freshman Tom Needham (Saline, Mich./Saline) and junior Austin Jordan (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) tallied a team-high five ground balls each.

The Scots return to Bahlke Field on Saturday, April 29, to host Adrian College in the regular-season finale for both teams. The opening face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
