Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's lacrosse team suffered a 10-7 setback to Baldwin Wallace University (OH) on Saturday (March 11) at Bahlke Field, snapping the Scots' eight-game winning streak at Bahlke Field.
Junior Austen Irrer (Midland, Mich./Midland) scored a team-high three goals for his first hat trick of the season and added an assist to lead the Scots (3-2 overall), while four other players found the net. Baldwin Wallace was led by Brock Riemenschneider's three goals, while Jack Gerlack and Matt McDowell each scored twice.
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead before Alma responded with two goals of its own, with freshmen Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio/Worthington Memorial) and Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) tying the game at 2-2 after the first 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, Baldwin Wallace scored early in the period to break the tie before Irrer scored with 13:11 in the half to knot the contest at 3-3. The Yellow Jackets responded with four straight goals to take a 7-3 advantage into the half.
The second half scoring came down as the defenses stepped up. Alma got within two goals at 8-6 with 13:39 to play in the game after a goal by Irrer, but a goal by Gerlack 1:28 later put Baldwin Wallace back up by three. After the Yellow Jackets went up by four goals with 10:02 to play, Irrer completed his hat trick, scoring with 1:32 remaining.
Sophomore Cam Stelljes (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) stopped 16 shots in net as Alma was outshot by a 47-26 margin, while senior Mitch Adams (Novi, Mich./Novi) led the team with five ground balls. Junior Austin Jordan (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) posted a team-high four caused turnovers.
Alma will travel to Heidelberg University (OH) on Wednesday, March 15, for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Student Princes.
