Dallas, Texas - The Alma College men's lacrosse team opened the 2017 campaign with a convincing victory, outscoring the University of Dallas by a 12-6 margin at Crusader Field.
Junior Daniel Buchy (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) scored a game-high five goals, while sophomore Jared Nycz (Elma, N.Y./Iriquois) tallied a game-high nine points, scoring three times and registering six assists.
Sophomore Jake Ellens (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) also notched a hat trick, scoring three times, as the Scots outshot the host Crusaders, 62-18.
"It was nice to be outside after a long preseason," Head Coach Michael Kinney said. "It's obvious we are very young on offense this year but our defense did a great job stepping into the shoes of graduated players. We will look to improve over the next couple of games as we prepare for the MIAA season."
Alma opened the game by scoring eight straight goals, including three each by Buchy and Nycz, before Dallas was able to get on the board with 6:13 left in the opening half. The Scots led, 9-2, at the break and scored three times in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Defensively, senior David Smith (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak) picked up his first career win, making five saves on 11 shots in his first career start in goal.
Freshmen Jacob Urbano (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) and Max Linscott (Columbus, Ohio/New Albany) led the team with five ground balls each, while Urbano and senior TJ Miller (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) split face-off duties, winning a combined 15 of 22 draws.
Alma will continue the Texas portion of its season-opening road trip with a contest at Southwestern University on Monday, Feb. 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
