Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's lacrosse team has been picked to finish second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, it was announced today (Friday, Feb. 10) as the league office released its' annual preseason coaches poll.
The Scots, which finished second in the MIAA a year ago and advanced to the MIAA Tournament championship game, received 39 points in the balloting. Albion College, which won the regular-season and tournament championships last season, topped the poll with 49 points, including seven of eight first-place votes.
Trine University (35 points) was picked to finish third, while Hope College (33 points) was slated fourth.
Alma returns four of its five top point-getters from last season's squad, including sophomore Jared Nycz (Elma, N.Y./Iriqouis), who scored 35 goals and tallied 47 assists for 82 points to earn MIAA Offensive MVP and Rookie of the Year honors. Junior Daniel Buchy (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro), sophomore Jake Ellens (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and junior Austen Irrer (Midland, Mich./Midland) also return after posting more than 30 points in 2016. Buchy scored a team-high 44 goals last year, while Ellens tallied 34-11-45 totals. Irrer scored 24 goals and added nine assists for 33 points.
Alma opens the season on Saturday, Feb. 25, taking on the University of Dallas in Dallas, Tex. The Scots will visit Southwestern University (Texas) on February 27, followed by a trip to Hendrix College (Ark.) on March 1. Alma's first home game is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, when Elmhurst College (Ill.) visits Bahlke Field.
