Men’s Basketball Suffers Close Setback to Trine

Angola, Ind. - The Alma College men's basketball team fell 79-71 to defending regular-season MIAA Champions Trine University (IN) on Sunday (Jan. 12).

Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) led all players in scoring with 21 points. Both Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) and Zach Sinke (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) had 14 points. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) finished with nine points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Alma trailed for most of the game, but only by single-digits. It wasn't until the start the second half that Trine would take its biggest lead of 15 thanks to an 18-6 run.

Sinke hit two quick threes to get Alma back to within nine and force Trine to call a timeout. But the break didn't stop Alma's momentum; the Scots kept pouring it on with an 18-2 run. They took a 59-58 lead with 6:52 remaining after Kleiver scored a bucket. It was their first lead since the 8:42 mark of the first half.

The game was tied at 63 with 5:30 remaining. From that point on, Trine went on a 12-4 run to take control of the game in the waning minutes. Alma shot 3-for-8 over that span while Trine went 6-for-10 with four offensive rebounds.

Trine finished with nearly twice as many points in the paint as Alma did. Meanwhile, Alma shot just 31 percent from deep, the lowest three-point shooting percentage in its last four games; the Scots had won the other three.

Alma returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 15) when it hosts defending MIAA Tournament champion Albion College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
