Scots Fall to Trine, Still Earn Spot in MIAA Tournament

Angola, Ind. - The Alma College men's basketball team dropped its final game of the regular season 85-52 to Trine on Saturday (Feb. 16). Despite the loss, the Scots claim the sixth seed in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament and will next week.

Brandon Rake (Whitehall, Mich. / Whitehall) led Alma (5-20, 4-10 MIAA) with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) also scored 13 points while Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) added 12.

Myles Copeland scored a game-high 20 points for the Thunder. Langston Johnson scored 19 and Pete Smith had 12. Marcus Winters put up nine assists, five rebounds and five steals.

Alma trailed by two at the half, but suffered a poor shooting second half, making only 25-percent of its shots.

How It Happened

  • The Scots jumped out to an early 13-7 lead six minutes into the game. Trine would hit three of the next four shots to pull within two and would fight for the lead with Alma until the end of the half. There were five lead changes and three ties in the final eight minutes of the half. The Scots trailed 30-28 at the break.
  • Trine opened the second half on a 15-4 run. Kleiver brought Alma back to within 10 with a three and two free throws, but the Thunder came right back with a 12-3 run to extend its lead to 22. Late in the game, they would go on an 18-3 run to seal the win and the top seed in the conference.

Alma will travel to the third seed in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday (Feb. 20).
