Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College men's basketball team wrapped up its exhibition schedule on Thursday (Nov. 9) night, falling to Cornerstone University by a 73-59 margin at Mol Arena.
The Golden Eagles, the top-ranked team in NAIA Division II, took control of the game in the final 12 minutes with a 21-0 run to capture the victory. The game counted as a victory for Cornerstone, but was considered an exhibition for the Scots, with the statistics and record not counting towards Alma's season totals.
The Scots played the Eagles tight for the first 28 minutes of the game, staying within 10 points and trailing 36-33 at halftime. Sophomore Preston Laketa (Concord, Mich./Hanover-Horton) led Alma with 13 points, including 10 in the first half. Laketa was perfect from the floor in the game, making all five of his shots, three of which were three-pointers. As a team, the Scots his 42 percent of their threes in the game, going 8-for-19 from long range.
Junior Doug Bradfield (Mason, Mich./Mason) paced the Scots on the glass, collecting a team-high eight defensive rebounds. Alma limited Cornerstone to four three-pointers in the game as the ? shot 19 percent from behind the arc.
Kyle Steigenga led Cornerstone in scoring with 24 points, while Sam Vader Sluis posted a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Alma will open the 2017-18 season on Friday, Nov, 17, traveling to Illinois Wesleyan University for an 8 p.m. (ET) contest. The Scots will play four straight road games to begin the season, taking on No. 2 Augustana College (IL), Elmhurst College (IL) and Ohio Northern University. Alma's first home game is on Sunday, Dec. 2, when it welcomes No. 9 Washington University (MO) to Art Smith Arena.
