Salem, Ore. - The Alma College men's basketball team dropped a 99-72 decision to No. 8 Whitworth University on Wednesday (Dec. 21) in non-conference action at the Cone Field House on the campus of Willamette University. The Scots fall to 3-6 overall with the loss, while the Pirates improve to 8-1.
Senior Trevor Gernaat (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian/Mid-Michigan CC) led Alma with 19 points, hitting seven of his 14 shots, while senior Chase Fairchild (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) netted 17 points, including a team-high four three-pointers. Freshman Preston Laketa (Concord, Mich./Hanover-Horton) tallied 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while senior Tyler Edwards (Flint, Mich./Swartz Creek) grabbed eight rebounds.
Whitworth was led by Christian Jurlina's 28 points, while Kyle Roach contributed 25 points, including a game-high five three-pointers.
The Pirates held a 55-36 lead at the half and led from start to finish, shooting 55.7 percent from the floor, including 60 percent from behind the arc. The Scots netted 41.5 percent of their shots and out rebounded Whitworth by a 40-34 margin.
Alma will have a week off before traveling to Defiance, Ohio, to participate in the Defiance College Classic on Thursday-Friday, Dec. 29-30. The Scots will take on Hanover College (IN) on Thursday, followed by a game with the host Yellow Jackets on Friday.
