A thrilling come from behind effort by the Alma College Men's Basketball team at Albion on Wednesday night culminated with a last second basket by Sr. F Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd). The tip-in gave the Scots a 56-55 win and improved their overall record to 9-15 and 4-10 in the MIAA, while the Britons fell to 2-11 in the league and 6-18 in 2012-13.
"I was going to be very happy for our guys that we were able to stay close in this one," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "To win this game scoring five points in 15 minutes is incredible. The winning basket was an example of our effort tonight. Two tip in chances on the last play was incredible.
"I'm very happy for these guys and proud they keep battling. I feel for Albion and their coaches because they also battled. It wasn't a pretty game, but it certainly was exciting. You would think both teams were still playing for a tournament berth."
The Scots jumped out quickly and led 8-0 after a bucket by Fr. G Scott Nikodemski (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) at the 15:02 mark. The game was tied at 8-8 with 11:36 remaining and eventually the Britons took their first lead of the contest at 20-19 at 5:11.
A 6-0 run was culminated by a three-pointer by Silverthorn for a 25-20 Alma lead at the 4:24 mark. The two teams fought it out evenly the rest of the first frame and the Scots walked off the hardwood with a 33-27 advantage at the midway point.
The two teams came out in the second half and played evenly throughout. The Scots extended their lead to 46-38 on a three-pointer by Sr. G Dustin DeShais (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) with 13:18 left in the game. The Scots still led by eight at 52-44 after a lay-up by Fr. G DJ Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) at the 7:21 mark.
However, the Britons then went on an 11-0 run over the next six plus minutes and led 55-52 with just 58 seconds left in the game. A DeShais jumper cut it to 55-54 with 37 seconds remaining and then two missed shots led to Silverthorn's dramatic put back with one second on the clock that gave the Scots the 56-55 win.
Beckman had team-highs with 14 points and 10 rebounds and added three steals, while DeShais finished with 11 points and five boards. Jr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) finished with nine points, four assists and four steals.
Alma concludes the 2012-13 season on Saturday afternoon when they play at Kalamazoo College. Tip-off for the finale is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
