The Alma College Men's Basketball team hit the road on Saturday and came away with a gutty victory over Oberlin (Ohio) College by a score of 71-57. With the win, the Scots improved to 3-4 on the season while the Yeomen fell to 2-6 on the 2012-13 season.
"It was a nice road win for us as they are a hard team to play," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "They run their offense really well and we adjusted nicely in the second half defensively. We showed some poise in the last 10 minutes offensively as well and we did a great job at the free throw line. Our bench was ready to play and we got solid contributions from some different guys."
The Scots jumped out to a 11-2 lead on a lay-up by Fr. F D.J. Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) at the 15:33 mark of the first half, but a 10-0 run by the Yeomen gave them a 12-11 advantage with 11:26 left in the frame. From that point, there were three lead changes before Alma took control a bit and went into halftime with a 29-24 lead.
In the second half, the game was tied at 34-34 and 36-36 before Jr. F Jacob Murawske (Harbor Beach, Mich./Harbor Beach) hit a three-pointer that sparked a 15-4 run and a 51-40 lead at the 8:27 mark. From that point, the closest Oberlin could get was six points as the Scots buckled down for the win. The final score of 71-57 was actually the Scots' largest lead of the contest.
Jr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) had a big day for the Scots as he led the team in points with 17, rebounds with eight and assists with seven. Sr. G Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) added 12 points and five boards, while Murawske had 10 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. Additionally, Beckman finished with 10 points in the victory.
Alma will host Spring Arbor next Saturday afternoon at Art Smith Arena beginning at 5:00 p.m.
